AUSTRALIA SOUTHBOUND - ISTANBUL, Oriental Show

Savour Turkish cuisine and enjoy traditional entertainment in one of this exotic city’s finest nightclubs.
From the port it is a short drive through the illuminated streets of Istanbul to ‘Kervansaray Night Club’ - an establishment popular with both visitors and locals.

AUSTRALIA SOUTHBOUND - ISTANBUL, Classical Istanbul
B – Classical Istanbul (Full day with lunch) – approx. 8 hrs.

We will first drive to the Chora complex to visit the 11th century Chora Church. Although unremarkable from the outside the interior walls are decorated with marvellous 14th century mosaics. These brilliantly coloured paintings illustrating scenes from the life of Christ and the Virgin Mary express the strength of Byzantine art. St. Savior is regarded as the second most important Byzantine monument in Istanbul and from there we drive to the Basilica of Hagia Sophia, which is considered the most significant.
It is unquestionably one of the finest buildings of all time with its immense dome rising 55 metres above the ground and diameter spanning 31 metres. Built by Constantine the Great and reconstructed by Justinian in the 6th century we can admire the building’s majestic serenity and its fine Byzantine mosaics.
The centre of Byzantine civic life was the Hippodrome, the scene of fast and furious chariot races. Of the original decoration only three monuments remain and we will see the Obelisk of Theodosius, the bronze Serpentine Column and the Column of Constantine as well as remains from the curved end of the Hippodrome wall before rejoining our coach in the area known as Sultan Ahmet. Visit the Blue Mosque, supremely elegant, the Imperial Sultan Ahmet Mosque with six minarets was built between 1609 and 1616 by the architect Mehmet. During our visit of the interior we can see the magnificent panelling of blue and white Iznik tiles and appreciate why the mosque is perhaps more familiarly known as the ‘Blue Mosque’.
Lunch will be at a local restaurant in the old part of Istanbul.
After lunch we will visit the nearby 6th century Byzantine cistern known as Yerebatan Cistern. Inside this masterpiece of engineering we can see three hundred and thirty six massive Doric and Corinthian columns that support the fine brick vaulting of the immense chamber.
Our final visit to the Grand Bazaar – Istanbul’s bustling covered bazaar. Over forty miles of streets and alleyways housing small shops and stalls stretch as far as the eye can see.
There will be time to wander through the labyrinth of streets whose names the ‘goldsmith’s street’, the ‘carpet sellers street’, the ‘street of the skullcap maker’ recall the days when each trade had its own quarter! Today, world-renowned carpets and kalims, stylish leather and suede coats, exquisite gold and silver jewellery, brilliant hand painted ceramics, copper and brassware, traditional handicrafts and souvenirs spill from the shops into Kapali Carsi’s narrow streets - myriad Turkish delights!

AUSTRALIA SOUTHBOUND - ISTANBUL, Istanbul Old City Tour
C – Istanbul Old City Tour (Morning) – approx. 4 hrs.

From the port we drive across Galata Bridge to Old Stamboul for our visit to what is considered one of the greatest churches in the world. The Emperor Justinian commissioned the Basilica of Hagia Sophia or ‘Holy Wisdom’ in the 6th century. The majestic building with its immense dome rising 55 m above the ground and a diameter spanning 31 m was for 900 years Constantinople’s cathedral.
After the 1453 Turkish conquest it served as a mosque until 1934 when Ataturk turned it into a museum where today we find an impressive collection of fine Byzantine mosaics.

From here we continue to the Spice Bazaar, immersing you in a myriad of colours and flavours and involving you in the local practice and customs. The Spice Bazaar is one of the oldest bazaars in Istanbul. Located in Eminonu, it is the second largest covered shopping complex after the Grand Bazaar. There are different accounts regarding the origin of the name bazaar. Various spices from the Orient were offered here in the past. It was called The Egyptian Bazaar (Misir Çarşısı) because the spices used to be imported from Egypt. On the other hand, in the Byzantine period, the site of the Bazaar was the centre of corn trade. And the word misir has a double meaning in Turkish: “Egypt” and “corn”. The Spice Bazaar was designed by the chief court architect Koca Kasim Aga, but completed by architect Mustafa in 1660.

AUSTRALIA SOUTHBOUND - ISTANBUL, Bosphorus Cruise
D – Bosphorus Cruise (Afternoon) – approx. 4 hrs.

Along the shores of the winding strait that separates Europe from Asia is a delightful and surprising mix of past and present, grand splendour and simple beauty. Modern hotels stand together with old wooden villas or ‘yali’ and splendid marble palaces alongside strong fortresses.
Our 90-minute cruise on this important waterway that forms an integral part of the city’s everyday life provides us with a unique glimpse of one of Istanbul’s most fascinating faces.
It is a short drive to Eminönü on the Golden Horn where we embark our boat and follow Istanbul’s European shoreline. On the bank we see the magnificent Dolmabahce Palace, which became the residence of the sultans in the 19th century. During our voyage we pass the parks and imperial pavilions of Yildiz Palace.
In 1874 Sultan Abdülaziz refurbished Ciragan Palace behind whose 300-metre marble façade facing the shores of the Bosphorus one of Istanbul’s grandest hotels can be found today.
We pass under one of the longest suspension bridges in the world. Elegantly spanning the water the Bosphorus Bridge linked Europe and Asia for the first time. Just past the bridge on the Asian side lies the beautiful Beylerbeyi Palace with Camlica hill, the highest point in Istanbul, rising up behind. Across the Bosphorus on the European side we can see the contrasting elements of old and new with the wooden Ottoman villas of Arnavutköy and the luxurious apartment blocks of Bebek. Facing each other across the strait are the fortresses of Rumeli Hisari and Anadolu Hisari, which stand like sentries guarding the city. Shortly past them we reach the second link between the two continents, the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge where we cross over to the other side of the waterway and make our leisurely way back to Eminönü.
From here we continue by bus to Kapali Carsi – Istanbul’s bustling covered bazaar. Over forty miles of streets and alleyways housing small shops and stalls stretch as far as the eye can see.

AUSTRALIA SOUTHBOUND - KEPEZ, Gallipoli Battefields
A – Gallipoli Battefields (Full day with lunch box) – approx. 9 hrs.

Following the departure from the ship guests will cross to the other side of the Dardanelles by public ferry. Coaches will be waiting there for the drive to the Gallipoli Peninsula and Anzac Cove.
From the Anzac Cove, proceed to see Brighton’s Beach, the intended landing place, and on to the Beach Cemetery.
The tour will continue with a visit to the Lone Pine Australian Memorial and Johnston’s Jolly. Here you will be able to have a look at the original Allied and Turkish trenches and tunnels.
Other memorials include The Nek - site of the famous Light Horse Brigade depicted in the movie Gallipoli and the Chunuk Bair New Zealand Memorial. The last visit will be to the Kapatepe War Museum, which contains relics from the campaign including original diary extracts and letters.
Time at leisure enjoy your lunch boxes.
In the afternoon, travel towards the Seddülbahir area past small villages. You will see the Helles Memorial, the British Empire and Dominion Memorial to the Gallipoli campaign, the broken walls of the great fort of Seddülbahir, the Barrier of the Sea and the square pillars of the largest memorial on the peninsula at the head of Morto Bay – the Çanakkale Sehitleri Aniti (Çanakkale Martyrs Memorial).
This is where the Republic of Turkey, in the 1950s, built its tribute to those who had defended the Dardanelles against foreign invasion in World War I.

Following the departure from the ship guests will cross to the other side of the Dardanelles by public ferry. Coaches will be waiting there for the drive to the Gallipoli Peninsula and Anzac Cove. Following the ceremony continue to the Kabatepe War Museum, which contains relics from the campaign including original diary extracts and letters.
Return back to Eceabat for the ferry crossing back to Kepez.
Arriving back in Kepez continue to Troy where you will have time at leisure to enjoy your lunch boxes.
For most of the last 3000 years, people assumed that Homer\'s Iliad was fiction, and that Troy (Truva in Turkish) never existed. The fabled city of Troy was just an odd hill on the shores of the Dardenelles until avid amateur archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann dug away the dust of time to find this many-layered city. Today, you can walk through layers of its age-old life, imagining heroes, battles and betrayals acted out among these fallen stones.
You visit the fabled city of Troy, where Greek and Trojan hero\'s fought the famous Trojan War for the honour of Helen.
Drive back to the pier in Kepez.

AUSTRALIA SOUTHBOUND - KUSADASI, Priene, Miletus & Didyma
A – Priene, Miletus & Didyma (Full day with lunch) – approx. 9 ˝ hrs.

Depart from the port of Kusadasi and drive to Priene, which is one of the best preserved Old Greek cities on the Aegean Coast. In Priene, which has ruins dating to the 6th century BC, you will visit the remains of the Temple of Athena, erected by Alexander the Great in 334 BC. Next, see the theatre originally built by the Greeks in the 4th century BC., but altered by the Romans in the 2nd century AD. to increase its seating capacity to hold almost 6,000 spectators. Continue to Miletus one of the pillar of old Greek cities very famous with its philosophers and mathematicians like Tales etc.. These ancient ruins lie on a hill near the Aegean Sea. Explore the ancient theater, built circa 4th-century B.C. The theater could accommodate over 15,000 spectators. Visit the well-preserved Bath of Faustina, named after the wife of Marcus Aurelius, who ordered their construction.
After lunch in a local restaurant visit Dydima. In antiquity, Didyma was connected to Miletus by a sacred road. Visit the ruins of the Temple of Apollo, one of the largest temples from the Hellenistic Period. Despite extensive construction, the temple was never fully completed.

In three sites there are bumpy roads and so many steps.
In Didyma there are approximately 15 minutes walking and around 15 steps to reach the temple. There is approximately 1 hour’s walking in Miletus where the terrain includes cobblestones for 300 metres and 50 steps in the theatre. The Driving time between sites totals approximately two and a half hours.
There are many steps, uphill climbing at Priene and uneven surfaces at Priene & Miletus. Extensive walking is involved.

AUSTRALIA SOUTHBOUND - KUSADASI, Ephesus & the House of the Virgin Mary
B – Ephesus & the House of the Virgin Mary (Morning) – approx. 4 ˝ hrs.

Begin with a scenic drive to the possible remains of the House of Virgin Mary. It is recorded that St. John brought the Virgin Mary to Ephesus after the death of Christ and that she spent her last days in a small house. The dating of articles found at the site lends credence to the belief that Virgin Mary lived here.
Continue to the most magnificent ancient city of Asia Minor, Ephesus, which is also one of the best preserved ancient cities in the world. During your walk through the famous Roman ruins, you will stroll past various remnants from the city such as the Odeon, the baths, the beautifully restored Celsus Library, and the Grand Theatre where St. Paul once preached, and which has a seating capacity of almost 24,000 people and wonderful acoustics. It is still in use today for music performances. Return back to Kusadasi.

AUSTRALIA SOUTHBOUND - KUSADASI, Ephesus & It’s Terrace Houses
C – Ephesus & It’s Terrace Houses (Morning) – approx. 4 hrs.

For ancient paganism as well as Christianity, Ephesus was an important religious centre second only to Athens and later Jerusalem. When the Virgin Mary passed away here, the historically important cult of Artemis gave way to Christianity, and both St. Peter and St. Paul came here to preach their messages. By 27 BC, when Emperor Augustus proclaimed Ephesus, a vital port city, the capital of the Asian Province, the city had already become one of the most important in the extended Roman Empire. Most of the buildings you will see here are from around that period, when Ephesus was a metropolis holding nearly a quarter of a million inhabitants.
Beginning at the Magnesium Gate for this tour, your expert guide will lead you on a leisurely downhill tour through Ephesus’ marble streets, passing and pointing out all the historically important sites on the way: the gymnasium, Temple of Hadrian, Upper Agora, Roman Baths, and more.
You’ll move on to the recently renovated Terrace Houses, which are the focus of this tour. Situated on the slopes of Bulbul Mountain above the city opposite the Temple of Hadrian, the houses on the upper slopes are reached via steps, and constructed so that the roof of one house forms the terrace of the house above it. These houses were inhabited by wealthy Ephesians, and are finely decorated with mosaics and frescoes. Built in the period of Augusts, they were inhabited until the 7th century AD according to evidence from excavations.
Finally, visit one of the most impressive sites of Ephesus, the Library of Celsus. Built in 135 BC by a son in homage to his father, this magnificent library is finely decorated with columns and sculptures.
Just a short walk away is the theatre from which St. Paul preached to the Ephesians, imploring them to give up their worship of Artemis and embrace the Christian faith.
At the end of the tour in Kusadasi you may follow the guide to visit some shops of carpets, you may stay on your own and enjoy some free time to visit the local bazaar or you may return directly to the ship.

AUSTRALIA SOUTHBOUND - LARNACA, Nicosia during the World Wars
A – Nicosia during the World Wars (Morning) – approx. 4 ľ hrs.

Under the 1878 Cyprus convention, Britain assumes administration of the island, which remains formally part of the Ottoman Empire until 1914 when Britain annexes Cyprus, after the Ottoman Empire enters the First World War on the side of Germany. In 1923 under the treaty of Lausanne, Turkey renounces any claim to Cyprus. In 1925 Cyprus is declared a crown colony. In 1940 Cypriot volunteers serve in various branches of the British armed forces throughout the Second World War.
Since the fall of the Berlin wall, Nicosia is the last divided capital in the world. Lying at the heart of the mesaoria plain almost at the centre of the island, Nicosia is the oldest continually inhabited city on the island. It became the island’s capital in the 11th century and was fortified by the venetians some 500 years later. You will travel by coach to visit the British military hospital (BMH) which was a very important hospital during the 2nd World War.
The coach will take you to Eleftheria (freedom) square and you will then walk down Ledra street, once a busy thoroughfare, to the check point.
This is the highlight of the day as you walk across the U.N. controlled green line into northern Nicosia, something that not so long ago was unimaginable. Once in the north you will visit Buyuk Han, the cathedral of St Sophia and the old market place. There will be free time on both sides of the line for shopping and exploring.
Your next stop will be Laiki Geitonia, where you will have a meeting with a veteran from the 2nd World War. You will hear as well a lecture from an old historical from Cyprus. The lecture will deal generally with the history of Cyprus during the 19th and 20th centuries and the way its strategic position has meant that it has always been controlled by the strongest power in the eastern Mediterranean.

After lunch visit the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage, established in 1975, commenced with seven orphans. With the help of local and foreign elephant experts, Pinnawela started a scientific captive-breeding programme for elephants. The free movement of the herd enhanced the chances for respective individuals of both sexes to get together and mate. The nearby river played a dominant role in this regard, and in 1984, the first baby of Pinnawela was born. The success story of Pinnawela has drawn the attention of scientists from all over the world. Watch them being fed or bathing in the river. Thereafter return to Colombo.

Visit The Cenotaph War Memorial in Viharamahadevi Park, Colombo. It is dedicated to the men and women from Ceylon died during the two world wars, it comprises a Cenotaph and Memorial Walls. It was originally built in the 1920s to remember both Ceylonese and Europeans from Ceylon who were killed in the Great War, was constructed at the Galle Face Green. It was dismantled and re-erected at Victoria Park, during World War II after fears that the Japanese might use it as a marker to direct their artillery.
Transfer to Colombo National Museum, the national museum was converted into the army command. The army paymaster operated from here. Also it converted into hospital and barrack.
Thereafter proceed to The Race Course grounds in Colombo; the Ceylon R.A.F. had only 20 planes as against that of 120 planes of Mitsuo Funchido. These 20 fighter planes got off from the Race Course grounds in Colombo. You will then witness one of the war cemeteries in Colombo. There are six Commonwealth war cemeteries in Sri Lanka, four in Colombo, one in the hill capital Kandy and one in Trincomalee. AUSTRALIA SOUTHBOUND - PORT KLANG, Faces of Kuala Lumpur
A – Faces of Kuala Lumpur (Full day with buffet lunch) – approx. 8 hrs.

Founded in the mid-nineteenth century, Kuala Lumpur, or KL as it\'s popularly known, is the youngest Southeast Asian capital and the most economically successful after Singapore – and it\'s still growing: building sites abound and the city is awash with stunning examples of modern architecture, not least the famous Petronas Towers.
After one hour drive (71 km) you will arrive to Kuala Lumpur. First, a photo stop will be made at King’s Palace. It is a palace and an official residence of the Yang Di Pertuan Agung and the Raja Permaisuri Agung (the King and Queen) of Malaysia. Then you will visit the National Museum. The site of the Muzium Negara – on a hill facing Jalan Travers – was originally the site of the old Selangor Museum which was opened in 1906.
From there, you will stop at the National Monument. View the 15.5m National Monument, dedicated to the nation\'s fallen heroes, the bronze monument depicts seven military figures from the Malaysian Armed Forces holding the national flag. Then you will proceed to the Independence Square, formerly known as the Selangor Turf Club, the scene of the annual celebration of independence - was once the focal point and cricket green (incl. football, hockey, tennis, rugby and other matches) of the British colonial presence in Malaysia. Appropriately enough, it was here, in front of the impressive and often photographed Sultan Abdul Samad Building, with its unique Moorish architecture, Malaysia celebrated its Independence Day in 1947. Before proceeding for lunch, photo stop at the Twin Towers, 88 stories high, the second tallest building in the world (1, 483 feet).
After lunch (drinks incl.: mineral water and 1 glass or either local draft beer / juice / soft drink and tea/coffee), depart to Jame Mosque (pass by) from the bridge.
The Jame Mosque is situated at the confluence of the Gombak and Klang rivers, where the early settlement of Kuala Lumpur began. It is the oldest mosque in Kuala Lumpur and was built by A. B. Hubback in 1909. It features graceful arches and domes, reminiscent of the Moorish era.
Before starting your way back to the ship (approx 1hour drive), you will continue walking to the Central Market or CM, where you will find local crafts and souvenirs.

More than any other spot in the country, Kuala Lumpur, or \"KL\" as it is commonly known, is the focal point of new Malaysia. The city\'s bustling streets, its shining, modern office towers, and its cosmopolitan air project an unbounded spirit of progress and symbolize Malaysia\'s unhesitating leap into the future. To some, this spirit seems to have been gained at the loss of ancient cultural traditions, but in many ways KL marks the continuation rather than the loss of Malaysia\'s rich past.
This excursion has been planned not only for those who have already visited KL and want to rediscover the town on their own, but also for those who would like to discover the hidden beauties on their own.
Departure from Port Klang with a guide who will give you all general information necessary to move in a foreign town and to discover such a wonderful city.
Arrival in KL after about 1 hour (71 km).
You will have around 5h30 of free time at KL to explore the city on your own. In the late afternoon you will meet the guide and drive back to Port Klang.

From Port Klang, you will follow the modern highway towards Kuala Lumpur (71 km – approx. 1 hour drive).
Kuala Lumpur will fascinate you with her beauty and charm with a skyline that blends the old and the new. On the tour, we will highlight to you the most nostalgic attractions, a unique architectural heritage and landmarks for visitors to admire.
You will pass by the National Museum, the Parliament House, the Lake garden / bird park, the KL orchid garden, the National Mosque, the railway station, the Chinatown and the golden triangle.
Photo stops will be made at King’s Palace (Istana Negara) which is the official residence of His Majesty, the Yang di Pertuan Agong, and the King of Malaysia; at the National Monument, designed by the famous sculptor, Felix De Weldon. This 15.54m high bronze monument was constructed in 1966; at the Independence Square, a 100 metre-high flagpole marks the spot where the Malayan Flag was hoisted on August 31, 1957 signifying the independence of the country from British rule and at the Petronas Twin Towers which are currently the world’s tallest two freestanding towers. The 88 storey Petronas Twin Towers soars to a dizzying height of 452m above the city skyline. This gleaming architectural delight inspired by the Five Pillars of Islam is the centrepiece of the ultra-modern Kuala Lumpur city centre.
Before returning to the ship, a visit stop will be made at Pewter demo centre, Batik demo centre and chocolate boutique.

A – Round Island Tour (Full day with lunch) – approx. 6 ˝ hrs.

This tour offers an interesting insight into life outside the city. The tour starts with a visit to the Tiong Bahru ‘wet’ Market, where you can see how locals do their daily marketing. You will get to taste some local freshly cut fruits.
Next, we proceed to Kranji Dam, once a swampy area used as the first landing spot for Japanese Advance Boats during World War II. From there, you can also get a clear view of Johore Bahru.
We proceed to Kranji War Memorial. Unveiled in 1957, the memorial overlooking the Straits of Johore, is the last resting place for many of the allied soldiers who lost their lives in World War II. It commemorates by name over 20,000 men and women of the forces who have no known grave. A Chinese lunch will be served at a restaurant.
After lunch, we continue the tour with a visit to the Bright Hill Temple, a famous Chinese ancestral worship place. The final loop of the tour will bring you to Changi, passing the Johore Battery built by the British in 1939 to view a replica \"Monster Gun\", one of the largest guns installed outside Great Britain during World War II. The last stop is Changi Chapel & Museum, where you will visit the museum and a replica of the chapel used by POW during World War II. Drive through Changi Village en route back to the pier.

The Jurong Bird Park, in 20 hectares of landscaped ground, has amassed over 8,000 exotic birds of 600 species, from all over the world. Even as you enter, talkative and brilliantly coloured macaws chatter and fuss. Ride the panorail “train” which enables you to cover more ground for an overview of the park, then explore on your own during this unstructured outing. In the world’s largest aviary, Asian and African birds fly freely in a tropical rain forest environment. Pelicans and swans reside in the nearby lakes, while seven rare species of crane wade in the Crane Paddock.
At the famed Bird Show - the very first of its kind in this region - a wide variety of the resident birds dazzle you with an entertaining and exciting performance. Move indoors to the World of Darkness, where ingenious lighting effects allow you to catch rare and privileged glimpses of the nocturnal world of owls, bats, night herons and kiwis.

C – Singapore City Tour (Afternoon) – approx. 4 hrs.

An orientation tour of the fascinating city of Singapore. This tour reveals both the old and the modern Singapore. See the city’s colonial district in its heritage and in all its splendour driving past Parliament House. The statue of the Sir Stamford Raffles, which stands guard at the Singapore River, where he was believed to have first landed and discovered Singapore in 1819.
From here, we visit Raffles Hotel, one of the Singapore’s most famous icons and one of the grand hotels of the Orient opened in 1887. Stroll the grounds of the hotel and you may wish to sip a Singapore Sling (at your own expense), where this drink was invented.
In Chinatown, visit interesting Chinese shop houses and the Sri Mariamman Temple with its colourful façade and the Gopuram.
Next we visit Little India. This busy area is filled with narrow streets and shop houses selling everything from sari to temple garlands and intricate ornaments.
Finally, capture a bird’s eye view of the world’s busiest port from Mount Faber. From the height of over 300 feet, you can see the oil refineries on the offshore islands, reflecting Singapore’s position as one of the world’s larges petroleum refining centres.
